Default Another Dumb Question

Well as most of you know, Eclipses are pretty slow when stock but can be fast. I'm wondering of it would be better to maybe swap a 3000GT SL Model Engine into it. Granted this would be a lot more money than it's probably worth, I could get sooooo much more power out of a V6 (think of the VR4 $$) than my 4 cyl.

I'm really trying to decide whether or not to trade my car, build it, or swap it. I take your opinions seriously so please don't just flame me (I know, kind of whiny at the end :fawk: )

I'd pick up a 4G63 LONG before I would consider an SL v6... even if you could mount one in your car, which I doubt.

They're inexpensive, and strong as hell.

Wouldn't it just be easier to make mine turbo instead of getting the 4G63?

Right now you effectively have a Neon motor in your car. It isn't powerful, has guppy cams, and is nowhere near as boost-friendly as a 4g63. The 4g63 has a larger aftermarket and will be able to put down 4 times as much power as the 420a.

h: Oh where to start... Um, let's do some 3rd grade math first:

HRC Stage I Turbo Kit - $2295
HRC Stage II Turbo Kit - $3049
HRC Stage III or IV or V Turbo Kit - $3500 to 5000+ easy

Stage I gets you barely equal to that of a stock 1995 turbo DSM. Since you'll probably want to be faster than that, you'll want Stage II at the very least. That's $3049 or more, but let's say $3049 which will get you 250 horsepower or so.

I just ran Kelly Blue Book on a 1995 Eclipse GS 5-speed, 100k miles, good condition and a 1995 Eclipse GSX 5-speed with the same options.

1995 GS : $4665
1995 GSX : $7560

So, the GS + a HRC turbo kit is : $4665 + 3049 = $7714

A GSX + manual boost controller + boost gauge = $7560 + $10 + 30 = $7600

The GSX will have MORE RELIABLE POWER, ALL WHEEL DRIVE, SUPERIOR UPGRADIBILITY, and a DECENT RESALE VALUE for *** LESS *** than modifying your GS.

[soapbox]

Quite frankly the 420A motor is crap compared to a 4G63. And there is no damn way you're getting the 3.0L V6 under your hood. People have been modifying 4G63 DSMs for 12+ years now, do you think that if there was a better solution we would have done it already? DSM's don't need a Honda-style motor swap to get anywhere, the 4G63 is just too damn strong to replace.

I have a daily driven, pump-gas, mid-12 second 1997 Talon AWD plus I run a performance shop, take my $.02 as you may.

[/soapbox]

I'd just like to point out that while I'm not opposed to general motor talk (in fact I relish it) this is a Honda board. Why you're asking about a '95 Eclipse here when there's got to be a dedicated DSM board out there is beyond me.

If you like your car, would like the extra power and don't care about AWD and such get a FWD turbo DSM. At least it's still not insanely overweight like the AWD versions. Or if you want AWD get AWD.

Dude, it's like this. You buy a BMW 328i thinking it's a nice solid car. You do a couple mods and then are like, I want my car to be as good as an M3. So then you decide the best course of action is to convert your 328i into an M3. Just buy the M3 man!

Thanks for the info guys, oh and MrFatBooty, I do realize that this is a Honda-Acura board but I made sure to read the "rules" and saw that you didn't say anything about limiting threads to HA's only

You're definately right--there's no problem bringing up other marques as long as the discussion is kept proper. I was just mentioning that you might be able to get a little more help out of a DSM board since they probably have a bit more experience in tuning DSMs than us Honda dorks.

(Well except for qtiger maybe, he's a converted DSM driver. )
