Default speedometer/odometer

Have a 93 honda civic hatchback, on which the speedometer/odometer work intermittently... Have replaced the part that goes in the transmission (?) without success. Am told it doesn't have a cable. Anyone have ANY idea of what is wrong and how I can fix it? It is my youngest dtrs car.
Thanks for any help.

Have you checked all the fuses, both under the dash, and in the engine bay? In particular, I would check the VSS/ALT fuse under the dash. If it's out, your speedometer will only work intermitently and it might also keep the alternator from charging the battery. Has it been having any other electrical problems at all? If you've already replaced the VSS in the tranny, I would say it's an electrical/wiring problem.

no, it hadn't dawned on me that it might be a fuse. I tho't if they were out, it just wouldn't work. I will try that. I know where the fuses are under the dash, but didn't know there were any in teh engine bay. Can you tell me where they are?
Thanks!

The main fuse box in the engine bay is on the passenger side, near the windshield/hood hinge area.
