Default 4TH Gen Prelude EL gauge problems

Hey guys,

Just got my girlfriend a '95 Lude SE with the EL gauges... Car is in excellent shape, but there is now a problem with the EL Gas and ECT gauge, in the center of the dash.

When we went and looked at the car, it was working fine, all the gauges worked. After we picked it up, we noticed that the gauge in the center no longer works.

It's not the sensors or their respective sending units, it is the gauge itself. It no longer lights up, leading me to believe there is a bad contact somewhere...

Anyone else have this problem? It is retarded for Honda to put in gauges that are critical for driving (ECT and FUEL) yet cost $600 for a new unit.

I looked all over and found only one other reference on Honda-tech from years ago, saying someone had a similiar problem, but that they had to buy a new gauge unit from ebay cause the new one is WAY to expensive.

I've already checked the operation of the combination light switch and this is fine, so I'm gonna have to tear apart the dash...

Anyone have this/heard of this problem?
Thanks for the help!

LOL are u retarded? - No offense

What r u talking about? The stupidity has has obviously resided with you...

The gauges are stock in a 92-96 Prelude SI/SE/VTEC (SR-V).

Technically they are called Vacuum-fluorescent gauges, but since no one refers to them (I've searched many places) as this, and having seen a couple of posts where they are referred to Electro-Luminescent (Hence the EL) gauges, I don't see what you are talking about.

Like Mikesta said, the stupidity is on you LOL

the el gauges/cluster have digital mileage on them, they are STOCK which are available in the 94 95 and 96 ludes only. i have a 93 lude and did a conversion from the ugly 92/93 plain cluster to the 94+. looks nice ask anybody with 94+ lude or somone with conversion.

Thanks for the help, but I already know that they came stock, as they are in my girl's recently acquired 95 Prelude SE...

I am having a problem with the center "sub gauge" assembly, that shows the fuel level and Engine coolant temp. It just stopped working the day we got it. I've already tried troubleshoting the problem, by testing the illumination /combination switch (dimmer). This is fine.

Oh well yet again I'm stuck with some stupid problem that NO ONE else seems to have... Just my luck

I'm assuming that you've checked all your fuses, including the ones under the hood, right?
Everyone got sidetracked with this thread...

Yeah tell me about it...

Now back to my problem...
Well, I did check the fuse box under the hood, and all the fuses were fine, but even before I checked them, I had downloaded the service manual for the 4th gen and realized that there is no seperate fuse for this gauge panel, just a fuse for all of the gauges and interior lights, so I know they are all fine, cause the interior lights and the main gauge cluster work fine...

So, it's not the fuses, but thanks for the suggestion... I mainly wanted to know if there is a specific problem with these sub-gauge assemblies, like a known bad contact or something...
Just so I can be informed before I rip the entire dash apart and have to troubleshoot every potential problem myself, which is gonna take some time that I don't have.
