You can build a sub box without using mat it just wont be as durable. A buddy of mine use's felt in his applications, That combined with silca powder should give it enough integrity to withstand the presure from the sub. Peronelly I use the mat cause it bonds way better with the fiberglass.
under no circumstances should you use just felt, fleece, tshirts, etc for any piece that requires strength - you are just going to be building a heavy, expensive and weak piece...

Good to know, Come to think of it I'v never actually seen his box, he just keeps telling me to use felt cause its cheaper.

Assume that the original "stretch" of every-day fabric adds no strength to your part....
