Stores that carry boat / marine supplies have better prices than Home Depot.

You can build a sub box without using mat it just wont be as durable. A buddy of mine use's felt in his applications, That combined with silca powder should give it enough integrity to withstand the presure from the sub. Peronelly I use the mat cause it bonds way better with the fiberglass.

under no circumstances should you use just felt, fleece, tshirts, etc for any piece that requires strength - you are just going to be building a heavy, expensive and weak piece...

resined fabrics (non fiberglass) may be hard, but it's very very brittle

You said "just" so im guessing if you put a bunch of fiberglass mat over the resined fabrics it will be ok?

yes - it's very common in fiberglassing to save time by stretching fabric (such as fleece or grille cloth) over a frame of wood to build an initial shape. That fabric is impregnated with resin, and left to cure. Once cured, this shape serves as the mold if you will for the real part that is made of fiberglass fabric (cloth, chop mat, roving weave, knytex, etc...)

Assume that the original "stretch" of every-day fabric adds no strength to your part....
