Which cam is the best for a bolt-on D16?
I was leaning toward the Zex street cam but they make a street/strip one too. Also Skunk2 and Crower make a SOHC D16 cam. Which one is better for a bolton 99 OBD-2 EX? Is one more easy to tune than another? I guess I'll use crower springs. Can I reuse my stock retainers, or are they a wear item as well? Thanks

ditch the engine...get a DOHC..and save your $$ in the long run...sorry...but SOHC's are only good for so much....and going fast really isnt one of those things...unless your willing to shell out mad $$$...not to flame...but no bolt on is really worth it in the long run...just do your basic I/H/E and maybe a cam gear or pulley set...my best friend had a SOHC in his 00 EX...and had the i/h/e set up...and couldnt race much...cause it wasnt that fast...
ahhh...ok..in that case...have fun...lol..jk..crower makes great cams...so does comp. cams..etc...i dont know if skunk2..or spoon makes cams for SOHC...but those would be good ones as well

As far as the SOHC VTEC being crap, that is by no means true. Sure it may not make as much power as the DOHC, but with bumped compression, an agressive cam, your standard boltons and some headwork you can make more than respectable numbers.

There are few guys running in the mid 14's with all motor D16Y8 engines. I/H/E, and a port and polished head, some weight reduction and you've got a decently fast car. A ported and polished head with an agressive cam, as previously mentioned can turn the engine into a whole different world. My friend put a nice Webb cam in his 90 Si hatch and the thing would rev to over 8k – this is the little old Si engine. He ran 15.1 with it too – I/h/e/ suspension, cam and 235,000 miles! No joke. People are too quick to say "swap" IMHO.
I have the Zex street/strip cam which i hear is comperable to the crower cam, anywho. The difference is pretty substantial, vtec is extremely noticable now and the mid and high end power is very noticable. I would definately suggest that cam:thumbup: IMO my car is very capable of mid 15's or better, i just cant get the damn thing off the line fast enough.
So you ran a 15.9 @89mph with just I/H/E and the cam? Is the 2.8 60foot because the cam looses alot of lowend torque? Does your car have any weight reductions and what was the weather like? I don't know if the obd2 computer will respond the same to an aftermarket cam.
