As far as the SOHC VTEC being crap, that is by no means true. Sure it may not make as much power as the DOHC, but with bumped compression, an agressive cam, your standard boltons and some headwork you can make more than respectable numbers.

There are few guys running in the mid 14's with all motor D16Y8 engines. I/H/E, and a port and polished head, some weight reduction and you've got a decently fast car. A ported and polished head with an agressive cam, as previously mentioned can turn the engine into a whole different world. My friend put a nice Webb cam in his 90 Si hatch and the thing would rev to over 8k – this is the little old Si engine. He ran 15.1 with it too – I/h/e/ suspension, cam and 235,000 miles! No joke. People are too quick to say "swap" IMHO.
