Default Auto trans slipping between 2nd and 3rd

I have a 97 Integra LS with an S4XA automatic transmission that has 124k on it. Once it warms up, the car will not shift from second to third. I have to accelerate hard in second and then ease off to let it shift into fourth.

I replaced the fluid, but did not have it flushed = No effect.

Acura dealership says the clutches are slipping and I need to replace the transmission. I just bought a used transmission. However, the Engine Check light came on last week and I found the following codes:
P0700 Transmission Control System Malfunction
P0715 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0730 Incorrect Gear Ratio

Any suggestions?

PS Is the old transmission core worth anything?

PPS I bought the car used from a Toyota used car lot.

have you installed the new transmission yet?.... yeah what your doing when you "ease" off, is just rev-matching so that the car doesn't have to try to match... because it can't anymore. The dealership was right, as far as the tranny you put in... i donno

The used transmission will be installed Monday 03/20. I bought some Honda/Acura fluid for that. So, I have my fingers crossed.

Installed the second transmission (used) last Tuesday. The transmission takes a long time to slip from 2-3. Actually, all the shifts take place at a higher than usual speed. Called Acura dealer to see if there were any adjustments I could make. He did not think of any, other than changing the fluid.

Default Transmission: Replace or Repair

Any suggestions on whether to replace the automatic transmission with:
1. a rebuilt/remfg one (from Acura)
2. have the transmission rebuilt (by Cottman)
3. find a used tranny and have it installed?

Thanks.
97 Integra, 124k miles, does not burn oil, plan on keeping 2-3 yrs.

Hi, welcome to HAN.

Since we're presumably talking about the same problem tranny in the same car, please keep the discussion within one thread. There's no need to open a new discussion topic to cover the same issue.

----

Here's my take on your situation:

A rebuilt tranny is going to be the most reliable solution, but the expense is an issue if you're only keeping the car for 3 more years.

OTOH, picking up a used transmission from an auto recycler is kind of like playing russian roulette... there's no real guarantee that the used tranny will be any more reliable. EDIT: Re-reading the thread, I noticed that it's a used tranny that's prompted the question.. h:

I'd err on the side of caution and have Cottman rebuild your tranny. (This is assuming, of course, that they do quality work and provide some sort of warranty. I've never heard of these guys before. h: )

Rebuilding your stock transmission will probably be cheaper than a factory re-manufactured transmission and provide a simliar level of durability.

(Thanks for combining the thread.)

Note: As of March 2006 Cottman is being merged under Aamco.

I got the estimate from Aamco today: 1st gear drum, torque converter and master kit (soft parts, i.e. bushings, bands, etc.) $838. A lot better than I expected! 12mos/12k warranty. So, I am going with that.

Good deal.
And you know that Aamco will be around should you need to make use of that warranty.

New results: It turns out the used transmission I bought was not for a 97 Intregra LS. One of the solenoids had an 8 wire plug, where my car is fitted with a 4 wire plug. The local mechanic that installed the used transmission never hooked it up. According to Aamco, that would explain all the slipping and flaring.

Just got home with the original transmission reconditioned by Aamco. Works great.

Now, if I can figure out, from the serial number, as to just what kind of car the used transmission belongs to I might be able to save it from the junkyard.
