Default speedometer not working

The speedometer in my gf's 94 civic ex auto only works sometimes. I swaped the vss out of my car and it does the same thing. I cleeded the connecter and put contact greese on it. Sometimes the speedo will work, then it just stopes for no reason. Any ideas?

yep, I had the same problem, and a cluster swap was what it took in the end. Changed the VSS twice, and still would mess up. (I actually had to change the cluster twice too, but I got a good working one.) Here is why I posted though, my "new" cluster is actually starting to have issues. So, I wonder if the clusters go bad a lot (not likely) or if the car in question has issues that cause the clusters to go bad. Some food for thought.

When you guys replaced the VSS, did you just get the top part or the entire piece that goes down into the tranny? I replaced only the top part of the VSS and my speedo still doesn't work, and still getting code 17.

aint' no way in the world that it should cost 200 bux.. it's a 10min job if that. maybe a tad longer if u'r car has the stock intake tube on it & you have to move it out of the way to reach down there!

I checked the grey plugs, used a little brillo pad to clean the contacts, and nothing.
