Default clear coat question

i'm looking to redo the clearcoat on both my cf hood and trunk.... i talked to one shop, and he said that he would just clean off the surface real good with acetone(sp) and spray over the old clear coat... is this the way they're supposed to do it??

or do they need to remove the old clearcoat b4 spraying on the new one? he quoted me $200 plus tax for both trunk and hood... is this a rip off??

All he really has to do is take a White Scotchbrite pad, scuff up the areas really well and respray the clear coat. Price is about right I guess...I'd try to get it for about $150 honestly.

Yes, the white scotch brite leaves very fine sanding scratches that you can't see, but when you're done sanding, the area will look dull...until you apply clear coat to it. And tell him not to worry about the CF, there's atleast 3 layers of gel coating on there, he's not going to damage anything unless he takes a grinder.

Yeah, all you gotta do is scuff up the hood and trunk so the paint will stick. You don't have to sand it down or anything. Thats what we did to my brother's carbon hood. Try and talk him down some.
