Default Honda MT Fuild vs. Mobil One

So my mechanic told me he was gonna put Mobil One MT fuild in there and I told him to get his hands on some Honda MT Fluid.

What's the difference between these two as far as longevity and quality?

Don't know, but I know I'd only use Honda MT.

Honda has their specific additives that they use for their transmissions.

It is just one of those things...I'd rather be safe than sorry, especially when dealing with the complexity of a transmission.

I only use Honda MTF and I have 142k on my tranny with no grinds, so it must do something special that other brands cannot.

But honestly...why pay the ridiculous prices for Royal Purple, Redline, Amsoil, and the like when Honda MTF is all you really need?

Use Honda MTF. Seriously, do not use motor oil. :nono:

Because motor oil is burnt (however minutely) in the process of lubricating a motor, it will not have the same quantity of surfactants and detergents that Honda MTF has. Surfactants help combat foaming (see LT's comment) and the detergents help combat sludge buildup due to heat.

I don't have data to support this hunch, but I also suspect Honda MTF has a higher latent heat absorption rate than 5w30 motor oil does.

The weight & viscosity of motor oil may be similar to Honda MTF, but over time, there will be build up on the shifter fork bearings and synchro sleeves if motor oil is used continually.

Honda is adamant about using their MTF for these specific reasons.

The only substitutes I'd consider would be Red Line's synthetic MTF ... and only if Honda MTF had been used exclusively up until that point.
