Default TL trannys/engines

do the older TLs (96-98) have any tranny problems, or any kind of well known problems?

and also does anyone know if they have "non-interference" motors, meaning that if the timing belt was to go, would it or would it not effect the valves or any other part of the engine.

Default Acura Interference Engines

Just about all Acura engines are interference (along with Honda). Notable exceptions are the NSX and SLX models.

Check it out: http://www.gates.com/downloads/downl...older=brochure

Also, the older trannys did not have the same incidence rate of tranny problems (the 4-speed auto) as does the current 5-speed type; but I would stongly recommend that the fluid be changed at regular intervals to insure trouble free performance. Honda trannys are not know to be bulletproof and they are on the pricey side to replace/rebuild.

Good luck! Also remember to replace the tensioner and idler rollers when replacing the timing belt.

Most of the new engines have timing chains so you don't have to worry about a belt breaking..
