Is there a special trick to changing the fuel filter in 5 generation accords? Any tips, tricks, or advice would be greatly appreciated. I thought this was going to be an hour long job and that was at 10 am this morning. Please help.

 

Its a Biatch man no more advice than that it sucks, I had a very hard time when I did it 6 months ago. Next time mechanic shop does it.

It's really not as hard as it looks. First thing you need to do is remove the gas cap to releave the fuel pressure in the gas line.The second thing to do is remove the bottom flare nut from the fuel filter. To do this you will need a 14mm crows foot line wrench socket a long 3/8 extention and a 3/8 impact gun to brake loose the flare nut, after you brake loose the flare nut you will need to use a wratchet on the end of the extetion until you can remove the flare nut with your fingers, do all this from underneath the car. Now from the top of the car you need to first remove the bolt from the fuel line at the fuel filter then remove the bracket that holds the filter. To do this remove the 6mm bolt using a 1/4 air ratchet with a short extetion and a 10mm socket and thats it. Install in reverse order but first put the filter in the bracket and slide it on to the fuel line and start the flare nut with your fingers and thread it on as far as you can then put the bolt in for the bracket and tighten it up [this can be done from the top of the car ]. Now you do the rest in reverse order. You don't need to tighten up the flare nut with the 3/8 air gun just use a 3/8 rathet and get it as tight as you can with that. To replace the filter should only take abut 20-30 minutes for the first time.

 

Easier said than done.
It's a bitch to get at it from the top because of the brake cylinder.
The best way is to remove this and do everything from the top.
It sucks,.. but who has an impact wrench at hand anyways????

 

Make sure you get a set of flare nut wrenches or you're gonna round off that square nut right off. Whoever said to change the fuel filter every 2 years is nuts... I went 114,000 miles and 9 years and the filter was still fine.

You need to remove the bracket from the firewall and slightly bend it towards the engine. Get a 19mm wrench on the filter base and use the 14mm flare nut wrench on the flare nut. Make sure you pull the flare nut wrench towards the drivers side. I kept on cranking on it the other direction and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't come off. If you can't get enough leverage on the flare nut wrench.... get some pipe that would fit over the wrench from home depot and use that for leverage. Also DO NOT forget to use the washers on the fuel line. I totally forgot to use the bottom washer and when I started up the car it was spraying fuel all over the place!!!! Also the bracket that wraps around the fuel filter will be a bitch to take off... I used a 10mm impact socket on it and it flew off.

It seems impossible to reach the bottom fuel filter flare nut from under the car, and while I can get an standard open end wrench on it from above there is not enough room to move the wrench. Is there a special sort of wrench that mechanics use? I'm thinking of something along the line of the bent box wrench we used to use on Chevy V8 distributor bolts. I can't believe Honda mechanics go through this hassle everytime they change a fuel filter.

 

The trick is to unbolt the fuel filter from the fire wall and bend it forward so that its almost horizontal. That way you'll be able to get both wrenches on the filter. I used a large adjustable monkey wrench and a 14mm flare nut wrench on the other.
