Default vtec not working

ok so my check engine light has been on for a whilein my 98 gsr. pulled the codes, said it was running too rich. took it to local shop to see what they thought, got the same answer. they said there is nothing wrong with any of my sensors and whatnot and that i was lucky. he said gas just builds up from a lot of stop and go short driving trips (i deliver for dominos). so he told me every once in a while to run it a little hard and get rid of some of the excess gas. they reset everything for me and everything was cool. i take it to the freeway and im shifting at about 6.5-7k rpms every gear just to run it hard a little and check everything. sure enough, in 3rd gear as soon as i hit vtec (around 5k) the ****in engine bogs out and stops accelerating again and my check engine light is back on. what the ****. i got an oil change not even 2k miles ago but my oil light seems to like going off lately. would that cause the engine to bog out? should i get a leakdown test or something? please any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

If your oil light is coming on and VTEC is not engaging, it sounds like an oil delivery problem. Have you checked your oil level lately? Do you see any dark stains on your engine block from a possible gasket or seal leak?

yeah...so anyway...
so i put in some oil today and that took care of the vtec problem im thinking maybe i have an oil leak or somethings wrong. can you guys tell me some possible problems it might be? should i get a leak test? i notice NO problems in the cars performance (other than vtec which was fixed by oil) and the shop said no sensors are damaged etc. should i jus get a tune up and have the whole engine checked?

when your about to drive your car after its been parked for afew hours just look at the floor to see if theres any oil puddles on the floor. that should help you figure out where its leaking. try to follow the leaking oil.

If you haven't topped off the oil in the last 2k miles since you're last oil change, it probably just burned some off. VTEC won't engage if there is not enough oil in the system to keep the engine well lubed at those high RPMs. Check your oil at every or every other gas stop!
