I snapped a stud on my 96 GS-R when switching from my snow tires to summer tires the other day. I knew that they just "pressed" into the back of the hub so I went to napa and got some replacements. Took wheel/rotor/caliper off and tried to get it in with no luck. Next I tried grinding down the stud head a little to try and help with clearance and still couldnt get it in. Next step was to take it to the acura dealer, and they said that they would have to pull the hub and replace the wheel bearing and that it would cost in the range of 150-200$. Luckily/Unfortunately they didnt have a wheel bearing in stock so I left with a still broken stud. So.....
1)How hard is it to remove the hub, and does anyone know of any DIY guides.
2)Is there another way to replace this stud.

if you have an orielly auto parts where u live, go give a check to them for the deposit to borrow a tool called a hub tamer, thats all you need, might take an hour to do it all.

 

no orielly auto parts. maybe autozone or advanced auto parts has it? can it be done with normal tools. i have an impact wrench and that standard sockets and such. if i get the spindle nut off does the hub just pull off? am i in jeapordy of ruining the wheel bearing if i do that?

 

you can remove the hub at home. it is a bit hard i will say.

take off all the stuff you say, and go to autozone and get a slide hammer

put the slide hammer on, and bang way till you pull it out.

if not what i recommend is this.

take the whole knuckle off, and take it to machine shop to have them pull it out.
that's what i usually did. i had both front hubs replaced with new bearing, and the cost of labor was $40 per side. he even pressed in my lower ball joint for me. I paid i believe $80 for a new OEM hub, and $40 for new OEM wheel bearings. the hub had new front studs.

the slide hammer will work at home, it'll be a little hard though.

 

Exactly like Bumnah says. Pull the hub off and get it pressed out at a machine shop. Why do you have to remove the bearing at all?

 

well i dont want to remove the bearing. what i want to do is replace this stupid stud. what exactly is the knuckle composed of?

i had one of my studs replaced

it cost me $50 to get it done. not too bad...
