Default HELP: Malfunction light came on and stayed on - checked manual already

My malfunction light came on yest for about 3 seconds then went off (this was while driving). Now tonight coming home from work, the light came on, blinked and then stayed on. The other thing is my car just bogs down between 1500-3000 rpm's in 2,3,4, and 5th. Like when i am in that rpm range, i floor the gas but the tach goes up slowly like if i was barely on the gas. Then once I hit about 4k, its goes like normal. Also, when my car is parked but engine on...my idle is at 1200-1300 rpm's and my engine seems to knock, every few seconds, almost like a pattern. This is seriously worrying me, my car only has 83xx miles and all maintenance has been done like a nut (all fluids flushed twice, 7 oil changes).
I just got home, looked in my manual. It says it could be the gas cap. I checked it and its tight (4 clicks). The next thing to check was oil level, its full. Its right at the top circle/line. The manual says beyond this go to the dealership. I'm under warranty still (car bought jan 01) I am figuring to go there monday. Is there anything I could check on my own? I don't wanna drive my car due to this, I'm afraid of damaging my engine. any advice is appreciated.

Check your spark plug wires on both ends. If there is one loose, that will cause a "bog" and if it wiggles close enough can cause the light to go out.

It's got a severe misfire, so severe that the cat. converter is being damaged. Anytime the mil light flashs while running you should stop the car. It will hurt th engine as well. Have it towed in.

he is right. you are having an ignition issue. and it most likely isnt as simple as bad plugs or wires.
