Default got a new motor

i had a d16y8 motor that was in pieces. i didn't want to take the time to put it all togethere so i bought my friends motor that he had laying around. so i was just wondering what everyone thought about the motor i bought. its a d16z6 bottom with gas bore pistons with gapless rings. the head is d16y8 and same y8 intake mani. this i my first time playing around with motors and putting one in my car. i was wondering if this motor will be any faster with the gas bore pistons and gapless rings? o yea i bought the motor for $125 and gave him my d16y8 motor that was in pieces. thanks

You mean that these pistons have lateral gas ports? Honestly, there is probably a reason he is selling for so cheap then. Lateral gas ports are used in race motors for tighter ring seal and more power. Race motors are usually rebuilt often, because the gas ports put more pressure on the rings and the rings wear more rapidly.

I know nobody makes shelf pistons especially for a d-series with lateral gas ports so they must be custom, what kind are they?

ok well the bottom is brand new i know that for a fact. it was taped off with paper around the top and there are little holes on the top of the pistons. we just put the head on last weekend. my friend is selling it cheap because he is moving out and living on his own and his parents want the motor gone.
im not a motor guy so sorry i dont know everything about motors, that is why im askin you guy on here what you think and if anyone knows anything about it.

Ask him what kind of pistons they are....If there is holes in the top, then those are the gas ports (top). If it was just rebuilt, it's a good buy...I would snatch it up quick.

It's for tighter ring seal. Like I said, most of the top piston manufacturers, if not all offer these gas ports but most poeple don't use them on street cars. You will get conflicting answers as to if it actually increases or decreases ring life. I can't push the argument any direction because I have not personally used them. You'll make more power with them than with stock pistons unless they are lower compression.
