Default Help - Car turnsover, but does not STAY running...

Hi All,

I have a problem with my 1995 Acura Integra Special Edition: I started the car up this evening and it will turnover, however, when I let go of the key it will automatically shut down.

I tried to restart the car about 5 more times and it still doesn't work. I then gave it more gas and tried again, didn't work. I gave it more gas and tried one more time and it did work, but when I put the car into drive "D" it completely shut down again.

At this time, I Just left it in the garage and had someone pick me up.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what is causing this? It has 130k miles on it, never raced or abused, in great shape, and is always garaged.

I was trying to start the car in my garage - weather is not a factor it is not too hot nor too cold for the engine.

Thanks in advance!!

This happened to me a while back with my G2. The engine would turn over but wouldn't catch. I had to hold it on start for like 6 to 7 seconds before the engine would start. The problem went away after changing the spark plugs.

I'd do all of the maintenance you may have not done yet, like spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, dist cap and rotor and so on.

Can you hear the fuel line pressurize when you turn the key from off to on (and not to start)?

My car had a similar issue when the ignition coil in the distributor died

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll look into the ignition coil.

I don't think it can be sparkplugs because it would be hard to burn all 4 of them out at the same time...

Is it possible it could be the Distributor itself (not just the cap)?

I did the following this weekend:

Changed Oil
Checked Distributor Cap (OK)
Checked Wires (OK)
Changed Sparkplugs - they were bad

I thought the sparkplugs were the problem... but I am STILL having this problem!!! Does anyone have any more suggestions?

I'm going to test the ignition coil this week when I get the time... anything else that could be a possibility?

I'm with Epoch, I'm fairly sure the ignition coil has died.
If it's the OEM coil, it's coming time for it to go IMO. There's still the chance that this could be fuel-related, either in wiring for the pump, a dying pump, or a clogged fuel filter. I'd comfirm that you're getting solid spark first. Then take stock of where you are in terms of fuel delivery.

Thanks for the tip - I don't think there is anything bad w/ the fuel delivery since my car is still speedy and there is no lag when I press on the gas...

I'll check the Ignition Coil this week and report back. In the mean time, if anyone has any other parts I should take a look at, please let me know - thanks
