Default Rear drum question

I did a search so :db:

Im trying to change my shoes but have had no success removing the cover. Do I have to take the middle nut off or should the cover pop right off??

Some of the drum hubs are threaded to screw a METRIC bolt into. You can use a hammer and screwdriver, but you run the risk of cracking the drum or breaking a chunk out of it.

Yeah, make sure the brake is off. If you look closely, you'll see two small threaded holes around the middle of the drum. You need two metric bolts (sorry I don't remember what size, probably eyeball it to one at a hardware store) and tighten each one a half turn at a time and the tap the drum once in a while with a hammer. Takes a little time, but it will pop off. The center cap does not have to come off.

Do one side at a time too, so you can check to make sure all the springs and catches are where they're supposed to be before you put the drum back one (compare one side to the other). I had good luck on mine with a good pair of needle nose pliers and an old broken straight screw driver (a chip out of one corner lets you hold the end of the springs when you stretch them and then slide them into where they need to go).

Nah, getting those damn things off can be a huge ass pain sometimes. I went to bleed my '92 CX's brakes for the first time and the bleeder screw snapped on the drivers side rear (it was seized). I had to pull the whole trailing arm off and cut the E-brake cable becasue I couldn't get that damn drum off (I was in process of changing over to GS-R disks so I didn't care about the drums but I couldn't change the rear yet). I finally managed to get it off with the trailing arm clamped in a vice and 2 bolts (I took it off to try to use an easyout to remove the old bleeder screw). I ended up having to replace the actual valve inside once I finally got the drum off. Big pain in the ass!
