Hey guys, I am going to start piecing together my turbocharger, and a couple of you guys are vets in the turbo world, I was wondering what do I look out for? I mean what kinda signs does a turbo show when its abused and old? tell me what to look out for and what not to get, before I buy I will always ask you guys, =D anyway, cya later.

 

Make sure the fins are in place and they don't move side to side or up and down . Make sure the fins are not tight . thats about all I know !

 

It's called an impeller and a main shaft. h:

The main shaft can have a bit of of play up and down, but it's really bad for it to move in and out.

Talk to Bakeoff, I believe he did a 'budget' boost build.

 

signs of oil around the turbo could mean possible bad seals,
check the exhaust and compressor inlets and outlets for traces of oil

 

Just be prepared to get what you pay for. I know several people who have bought used turbo's on Ebay and got EXACTLY what they paid for - turbo failure. Of course, oil residue inside the turbo can be an immediate sign of bearing or seal failure. Shaft play is also another sign. Every turbo has a little up and down, but like WCS said in-and-out should be reserved for the bedroom.

Another question you need to ask yourself - what is my plan for this motor?
If you're going to use it as a daily driver and not run the boost up very much, a smaller turbo would work great. If you're going to pound it at the track and make some real power, don't cheap out on the turbo and get a good one.
