Because my car doesn't have VTEC, I'm not an expert on the topic. But from what I've gathered from reading threads and stuff, VTEC is system in the ECU that changes the timing of the valves at a given RPM (around 5000-5500), giving the motor a bit of a power boost. Not a huge power boost, barely noticeable on an unmodified motor.

vtec is variable valve timing and lift control...the cam has an extra lobe in it that kicks in at a certain rpm....im not really sure how it does this but i think it keeps the valves open for a little longer than normal....correct me if im wrong

no that is correct, the lobes on the entire cam are a little bit diferent from the normal cams on a non v-tec engine. my prelude was a non vtec and i did a head swap and made it a vtec. The only difference is timing and the duration of the cam.
