Science vs religion
I just realized the ancient scriptures pretty much defy science, the earth centered astronomy and people being put to death for attempting to prove that the earth revolved around the sun. So since most of these scriptures are still in use do some people still believe the earth is the center of the universe?
I believe the Catholic Church disgarded Heliocentricism (Sun centered) for a century or two. They strictly believed in Geocentricism, enough that they threatened Galileo with torture unless he recanted his theory.
I doubt the church still believes in an earth centered galaxy anymore. At first, they accepted the sun centered theory, but were trying to say that earth was the only planet that didn't revolve around the sun.

Derek put it correctly. It wasn't the scripture.

all? are you sure about that?
I've read the bible many a times. and I'm the first to admit that I don't fully understand comprehend it but I don't recall anything about the any of the old testament talking about an earth centered universe.
galileo was "hated" because he pointed his telescope towards the sky, which was considered to be sacred.
call it closed minded, of the people in power at the time.
