Default Plasti-Gage sucks

I'm building a D16A6 for my autocross CRX, and I had my first experience with Plasti-Gage checking main bearing clearance. I took two different readings, and got two different clearances. Save your money, just use micrometers to check clearances.

wtf is plasti-gage? I use my freind's dad's digital micrometer :thumbup:

Plasti-gage is this round compressible plastic that you put between surfaces you want to check the clearance on, torque them to spec, then unbolt and match the now-squished plati-gage width to a scale that comes with the stuff to tell you how much clearance those two parts have. The wider the strip, the tighter the fit. Not as common now as it once was, but some old hot-rodders that couldn't afford precision measuring devices "back in the day" swear by the stuff.

i still use the stuff as well as a micrometer, but not digital i use the old fashion machine lathed tools

've built numerous engines with plasti-guage and it has never failed me. You must have used it wrong.

plastigages are the best thing since portable alcohol. hands down. I've been using them for years and NEVER had a mixup. micrometers are cool too but I'm a plastigage kinda guy.

Well, I figured out my error, and got much better readings out of the Plasti-Gage, but I'm still not convinced it's completely accurate. I've checked 3 different oversizes for my rod bearings, and according to the Plasti-Gage, the oversizes are only about .0002" different. Seems a bit small to me.
