Default grinding in reverse....

hey guys, on that 89 lude I bought..... when I put it into reverse, it tends to grind....I checked the tranny fluid and it was full, I havent driven the car yet so someone suggested it could be rust on the flywheel since it was sitting for a while and that it would go away when I drove it a while....the clutch is engaging because I can put it in first etc, just that reverse tends to grind, and reverse doesnt have a synchro, any suggestions? thanks....

before you put the car in reverse, bump it in first gear real quick - this will stop the input shaft from spinning and let the tranny mesh into reverse without grinding. I do this all the time with all stick shift cars, it's a good habit to get into.

Oh, and also check your clutch cable/adjustment, it might be too loose.

k i checked it and its ok, so yur saying there is no real fix to that, that I just have to put it into first then reverse if I dont want it to grind? hehe.....its not that I mind doing that, its just that if I sell the car the person buying it would probably be swayed away when they go to put it into reverse and it grinds....

If the clutch was ok before the car sat, then most likely it's rust on the flywheel - you can get rid of it by simply driving it for a while or if you want quicker results, you can slip the clutch a few times while you're in high gear on the road - but caution, you can glaze the clutch disc from too much heat that way if you go over board. If that doesn't fix it, you could also have a bad pilot bearing or a bad input bearing - this would usually cause the clutch to chatter as well.
