Anyone know of a reputable place to get one for a D series? I am slapping my old D16Z6 into a VX hatch. But I want to get it rebuilt before hand since it had 195k on it when I pulled it from my EX. I plan on running a turbo kit on it eventually so I would like to add eagle rods and a guard. I was planning on rebuilding it myself but after reading my helms I decide against it. So, I found a good guy to do it for $500.00 but I would like to purchase a kit to give him to save from induvidual purchases. Any recommendations on exactly what is needed for a basic rebuild? Any place you guys know of to buy rebuild kits?
autozone, they will ship it in 2 days for free even, but then again u may not need everything they will give u, u might want to buy peices urself, their kits come with everything, new pistons, rods etc u just hook everything to ur existing monoblock and use ur original crankshaft (honda makes great crankshafts btw), you may not need the pistons if ur buying ur own and id suggest better rods if ur planning turbo setup but then again honda makes great internals also, id say (and this is just my opinion) keep ur original rods just have them checked for hairline cracks and fractures (any climbing stores will xray them for u for cheap, cuz they have to xray their climbing equipment all the time), make sure they are ok, and just buy what u need ie (rods to fit rebored engine, o-rings, head gasket etc. good luck buddy
Go to Honda and tell them you need the bottom end gasket kit and the head gasket kit. It won't be super cheap because they will be OEM parts, but you know you're getting the good stuff. I did this for my B20 VTEC.
Tear it down first and see what kind of shape it's in - most likely you wont need more than rings, gaskets, timing belt and water pump even though it has a ton of miles. I often reuse the original bearings if they look good, regardless of miles, but if you need new ones then go to Honda - a lot of these aftermarket parts and kits are crap. I would also have the head taken apart and the valve guides checked. Most likely you will have to have these changed if your motor was using a good amount of oil (more than 1 qt in 2000 miles).
u can check valve guides when head is disassembled - basically your looking for excess play and clearance (you need some for expansion reasons but too much will let oil through and go out your tailpipe). If you like to rev your engine to redline at every other stop light, you probably will need guides cause they wear out quicker from that kinda stuff. Cylinder head work is best left to the pros... it sucks pulling apart a D16Z6 head cause there's a lot of small crap in it, plus in order to properly look at everything, it has to be clean, especially if you put it back together to rebuild. As far as the oil pump goes, you can just take it apart and inspect the gears for scoring and wear, then check for proper case clearance with feeler guage. Chances are there's nothing wrong with it, especially if your vtec was still functioning ok since it takes 55 pounds of OP to switch the solenoid. I've yet to see a bad OP in a D16 motor.
I highly recommend cleaning up the ports and doing a mild porting job on that head - it make a pretty big difference on those motors. They don't breath that well on the exhaust side, cause vtec is only for intake. If you end up taking everything apart yourself be sure to mark everything very carefully as to where it goes.
