Well the excessive oil consumption sounds like it's a combination of both rings and valve stem seals. This is prolly due to wear and tear on the engine as a whole. It's happens to even the best of maintained engines. Honda engine's are generally very reliable and long lived. You haven't mention the amount of milage on your car, but since it's a late eighties car... I'd have to guestimate it's got 200K+ miles on the odometer.

Well If I were in your position I wouldn't be opposed to rebuilding then engine b/c it would prolly be cheaper. I can do most of the work myself, aside from machining and such. In your case i'd prolly go smurfing for an engine from a junkyard. Thats not an engine you see being swapped all the time like the newer integra engines, so the cost prolly won't be that bad for just a long block(see def. @ bottom of post). It's doesn't take much worrying to swap out engines. It's pretty much just a unbolt, bolt-in affiar. The first *actual* work I did on a car was swapping an engine. It's a good learning experience about whats under your hood. If you want a general outline for pulling an engine, you can buy one of those manual or your car from autozone/napa/pep boys.

Long block: block/head normally w/o intake, exhaust manifolds, transmission, clutch, ect.
