OK heres the deal....
2000 civic si----
and i had a check engine light, and i checked it by touching the 2 connectors by the ecu, and it blinked 1 long and 7 fast... so code 17.....

what has happened: when i first start out driving vtec will work, but after awhile vtec stops working, and also when im cruzing the same speed for awhile my car starts to decelerate by itself and i feel a lil jerk. then when i try to stomp on it, i get no response, so i have to (while in motion) turn off the car and restart it. HELP!!!

What is it, what do i do?

VTEC will not engage under 2mph or soemthing like that, so if there's a problem with your VSS, and the ECM isn't reading your speed correctly, that might explain it. Are you having any problems with your speedometer? I would check to see if it's plugged in, as well as check the VSS fuse under the dash.

 

THANK YOU SO MUCH, man the guys at honda were being azzes. they wouldnt tell me what code 17 was. But i have to say you nailed it on the dot. your a lifesaver. yes i am having problems with my speedometer, it trips out, somtimes it will tell my speed and sometime it stays on zero. i didnt think that the problems were related so i didnt mention it. but now i know what it is. thanks man i really appreciate your help. now.... how do i fix it?

 

There's a VSS/alternator fuse under the dash. Check to see if that fuse is out. If it is, it's an easy fix. If it's not out, then check your VSS. The VSS is a relative large black sensor that is located toward the rear of the tranny, on the top. Its base is kind of triangular looking, and you should know it when you see it. I believe it's held in by a single 12mm bolt. If you know someone with a B series engine/tranny with a working VSS, borrow it and swap it in and see if it solves the problem.
