your stock tranny cooler is in the bottom of the radiator, but its not much, good for stock. the biggest thing to damage a transmission is excess heat, leading to breakdown of the fluid....and breakdown of the tranny.

an aftermarket tranny cooler will allow you to mount a separate cooler in a better airflow path with no heat soak from the radiator.
