The Bum,
I am just curious, I wanted to see what I can learn and understand to see if I wanted to attempt these mods in the future. Everyone's posts have been great. But i am still wondering what ported and machined means. please assist!
thanx

Porting a head refers to the intake and exhaust ports on the engine. When you port them your are enlarging them and getting rid of any rough edges that may cause a restriction or turbulence, you can then nit pick that and polish them up to make them real smooth to make air flow through them even better, all though in my opinion this doesn't do much good unless you port match the rest of your componets, think of it like this If you start off by running a 18 gauge wire from a power source and then 10 feet down the line run a 2 gauge wire are you going to be able to transfer more power? Not neccesarily you'll just not lose as much voltage after the 18 gauge wire, but the majority of the voltage drop will already have happened before you switched to the 2 gauge wire, ideally if you just run 2 gauge through the hole thing you won't worry about the voltage drop as much.

Buy a new throttle body, because porting that and making it completely even and buying a new throttle plate that will fit perfectly will be more work.

The intake manifold is very rough and should be ported a little and then polished.

Of course you will want and intake, weather it be cold air or a short ram.

after porting the exhaust side of the head, a header is in order.

New gaskets will be neccessary that will fit the new size of the ports.

*** I just learned a few days ago that the trick to porting and polishing is NOT how much material can be removed, but how much smoother you make it. So you do not want to make the intake ports like 5 mm wider, you will lose a lot of low end power.

sounds kinda complicated, i'll just havta do some more research
out of curiousity, would tuning be necessary after a good port & polish?
