Cams and cam gears - explanations?
I would like the know all the details about why cams cam gears help out a cars performance. Any info you can give me, whether it be as basic or complex as you want, I'd like to hear it.
I'd rather hear all the details than basics, so if you know your stuff, lay it on me.
Thanks guys

Cam gears allow you to tune the overlap of the cams and the peak lift to the desired RPM range that you're looking to make power [read: maximize the VE of the engine]. You could close up the overlap range to make more torque, or make more effective use of supercharger boost, or you could widen the overlap [like 90% of tuners], to make more power in the higher RPMs. There's some other concerns like peak intake velocity and valve opening rates, but that's the semi-complex answer.

This is kinda basic, sorry
Getting new cams changes how long they keep the valves open. The lobes on the cams hit the rockers which open the valves, and you can grind cams differently to keep the valves open for longer periods of time and at different times. An aggressive set of cams will usually have a good amount of overlap, meaning the intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time.
Cam gears i'm not quite as sure about, all i can basically say is they change the timing of the cams so that you can make them more agressive at low rpms or at high rpms. All they do is move power around, they really give you gains.
Hope that helps some, sorry if it's really basic.
