i talked to someone on honda swap who said that decking the head would screw up the ignition timing...

You shave heads, deck blocks; or, if you prefer, milling is a generic term to use... I've never heard someone call machine work on a head "decking" the head. Simple reason: there is no "deck" on a head, a "deck" is the flat area of the block that is even with the top of the cylinders.

Not ignition timing necessarily, but it will affect cam timing significantly.

Haha, I actually thought about pointing that out when this thread started but decided it would be condescending of me.

Hey, I'll take the blame on that one. The shop that did all my work 'termed' it that way and I followed... thanks for setting me straight.

Heh, sorry... just was one of those days and I couldn't handle any little annoyance. I didn't really mean to come off snappy, but I knew it would as soon as I posted

I think the idea of decking is a good idea. From my point of view anyway. If you deck, you can use a flat top piston, which is ligher than a tall dome piston, and allows better flow of the flame wave, and still have high compression numbers. I'm not sure, but I think they use flat top pistons in formula one.

Nope. Decking should only be used to bring the deck back to flat for a good seal of the gasket. Also, a properly made piston will not have a weight difference between domed or flat top shapes, and the domed piston would still have the power advantage because the compressed volume in the combustion chamber will be more even in thickness, which makes for a more predictable flame front in the cylinder, and also means that the force on the piston will be better directed to the center of the piston without the percussion effect of a flat-top. I would be thouroughly suprised to discover flat top pistons being used in formula one, considering all the engine manufacturing companies currently involved in the sport all use domed pistons in thier production engines.

its not that expensive to mill the head. Second, it would be useless to mill the head and than buy a thicker head gasket . Doing that is the same as not having the head shaved. Putting a thicker hg is raising the compression instead of lower it. I would like someone else said buy higher compression piston.

I'm not sure if you've seen an ITR piston, but I'd hardly call it a dome piston, granted it fits the definition of a dome, but its a pretty small one.
