Default F23A1 Idle issues

Ok so I need some advise I recently did a engine swap, 1st timer. I bought a JDM f23a to swap out my accords f23a1 that had a spun bearing and 200+k miles on it. I used only the block from the JDM engine, Everything went fine thought I got it all together right, installed it and tried to start it it cranked over back fired out of the intake and would never start so I towed to my mechanic he said I installed the crank pulley backwards and it broke the crank sensor and TDC sensor when I tried to start it, so I had him fix it cause at this point I am doubting my abilities so now it starts but runs like crap. My mechanic says the knock sensor is no good and thats why it runs so awful, Well being broke now cause of the crank sensor replacement $900.00 I told him I would change that myself since its straight forward, in the mean time I looked at my old engine to see how it was possible to put that pulley on backwards as far as I can tell you can't put it on wrong. So my question is does the knock sensor really matter that much that it would make the car run so bad? Also is it possible to put that pulley on wrong? Thanks 4 the help
