Default doh....oil leak.

ok, i changed my oil today. it was fine, just black. so decided to take the valve cover off. and putting it back on i kinda dropped and some seal fell off. it was a metal washer i think.

well i put the cover back on, i made sure that the seals for the spark plug hole, and the seal around the whole cover was on good.

i found that washer thing and put it back on.

then i popped my hood because i smelled oil. and theres a small puddle around the 3rd and 4th plug hole. i soaked it up, and drove again. same problem.

what is up? am i missing something? or are the seals bad?

im going to check again tomorow, just wanted some insight tonight.

Check and make sure you didn't tear the sparkplug tube seals when you put the valvecover back on. Sometimes they can get stuck against the sparkplug tube and when you push down on the valvecover, the tube can cut into the seal.

will do.

im going to try this before i take the cover off again. just start the car, and what where the oil comes out from. maybe that will narrow it down.

It's recommended that the seals are replaced everytime the valve cover is removed.

That gets pretty costly pretty fast. I would just keep an eye on all the gaskets, seals, and grommets, and replace them as they get worn.

The grommets maybe but the valve cover seal is a didfferent story. That's what I was told by a Honda mechanic.

I've replaced my valvecover gasket a total of 1 time in 5 years. During that time, I took my valvecover off countless times for valve adjustmets, headgaskets swaps, etc. I didn't change the gasket until a couple months ago, and even then, the original one was still sealing fine, but I just thought it was a good time to use the new one I had lying around. As long as you apply some permatex or hondabond on the sharp corners of the gasket where it goes over the cam seal, it'll seal fine. If your gasket is pretty old, then consider changing it. Otherwise, I'd rather not spend the $6-12 everytime I take my valvecover off to tinker with something.

They just want you to take it to them instead of doing it yourself. Them damn dealerships always trying to make extra money.
