Default not startin'

89 Civic LX

I went out tonight to start the car to jump my friend's Toyota and I cranked it up and it started to crank and turned over and died. Then I wait a few secs and turn the key. I hear the starter motor turn again only this time a bit faster. So I try it a couple of more times then just decided to use the other car. Now I think that the starter motor came loose and needs to be rebolted. Give me some feedback on this. The motor is not turning at all, but the starter motor spins.

Thanks,
Falkon

If you can hear the starter clicking, but it's not engaging the flywheel, check to see if the starter bolts have backed out at all. If so, tighten them back up and try starting it again. If not, you can try hitting the starter with something blunt to try to get it to catch, then try starting it again.

Ok i played around looking at it today and I noticed that the starter [ that's the round thing on top of my tranny correct? ] looked bolted on well. I put a piece of tape on a belt and tried to start it. The belt is moving which means it's turning the engine. I'm hearing a different sound out of the engine and I think either it's getting fuel/oxy starved or i have no spark.

OK! after about 15 sec of constant cranking i got the car started! Now! I'm getting a white smoke coming from my tailpipe. Could this be the head gasket? I don't notice a considerable loss in power. Could it be fuel ratios? The smoke is not dense. It is almost like when you see smoke coming out because of the condensation in the tailpipe, but it continues even when the car is warmed up. I haven't been able to check if it overheats yet.

Plz someone give me an answer,
Falkon

White smoke from the tailpipe usually means you're burning coolant, so the headgasket could possibly be the problem. Is your coolant level going down at all?

I love it. I really light that brake light and the backup lights.
I wish I could do that to one of my cars [i'd probably get a del sol]
I be poor right now so i envy you. I need to really get together with some friends and get to fixin mine. I'm gonna run it by the honda mechanic and get a diagnostics check. Thanks for all your help. Keep workin on that car!
