Default LS/VTEC Cam recommendation...

I'm curious as to what cams would be good in an LS/VTEC I'm revving to 7000 right now and that's all I want to do until I get a block guard in and right now I only get about 90 in our homemade 1/4-mile which is a bit slower than a friend of mine's 2002 civic SI I-VTEC... Which means... something's wrong. lol

my car has the old LS tranny and I'm guessing that's our first, and biggest problem.
But funny thing is I used to beat him with the old b18a.

secondly, I leak about a half quart every 60-70 miles if I beat it a lot... I'm guessing VTEC solenoid because it does good if I shift at the VTEC point (4800 rpms for me)

So what's the deal I gotta figure out wtf is wrong with mah baby and why she doesn't go go go very fast...

You would think with 12:1 compression she'd do better than 90 in the quarter. :-/

btw, they're stock b16a1 cams.

Don't get a block guard. Either install a girdle or uprgade your rods.

On cams... JUN Type-III make the nicest power curves I've seen in B18s (yes that includes LSVTECs). And of course, skunk2 Stage 2 is an almost exact copy of the JUN Type-III for 2/3 the price so that's what I'd pick.

Oops... meant girdle

I have JE pistons and Eagle rods... am I able to rev higher on those without risking damage to the crank/bearings/etc??? (btw all were within spec on the plastigage)

Maybe I'm just not revving high enough to get the power from those cams... but still... 12:1 1.8 liter VTEC and I'm doing 90 in the homemade 1/4??? that's BS I hate that. lol

Thanks dude

If you've got Eagle rods and all fresh bearings, pumps etc feel free to rev it past 7000. Am I right to assume that you took the old bearings and put them in the new rods? Even if they're "alright" on the plastigage you might as well replace em while the motor's apart. Too late now I guess...

After you fix whatever this oil consumption problem is, go ahead and rev her past 7 grand. The reused bearings (if this is the case) have me a little concerned but not overly so.

No No No, Oh no ;-)

Negative on the using the old bearings thing... fresh new rod AND main bearings for my baby ;-)

Wonder how far I can take it without a girdle.

12:1? Wow, what kind of gas are you using with that?

If everything inside the block's fresh, just fix that oil problem and rev away. The thing that generally breaks when you over-rev an LS bottom end is the rods, and you've already beefed up the rods.

you beefed up the rods? I would take it to 8500 (once that oil problem gets fixed) The weak parts of the LS bottom end are (in this order, and imo) The rod bolts, lack of a girdle, rods (any weakness compared to GsR rods is due to weaker rod bolts). If I had upgraded rods (with ARP rod bolts 9/10 times they come I think) I'd take it to 8500 with minimal worries, add a girdle and you should hear songs playing cause you're bottom end will sing as high as you want it.

PS Boost is for sissies (hehe)
