DO you have to remove the entire engine to perform the vtec swap

No, but it is a good idea to get the cylinders honed before installing new pistons.

It would also make it a lot easier to add the new oil lines and everything else with the engine out. Also, if your planning to build and LS/VTEC, you should consider upgrading to the VTEC oil and water pumps along with a VTEC timing belt, all which would be easier with the motor out. Seeya.
