When does vtec engage

When does vtec engage

Im pretty new to this still and i was just wondering when should my vtec be engageing. Or do i have vtec. How do I know if it is engaging. I have a d16y8

d16y8s are a sohc vtec motor

engage point is 5500 rpm

You sure?
I'm almost positive they engage at 4900 rpm, since 5500 would only leave about 1400 rpms worth of higher lift...
If you listen closely, you should be able to tell when the VTEC is engaged.
