Default Piston 1 TDC???

Okay... to determine Piston #1 TDC... You take the little mark on the oil pump gear and line it up with the mark on the block, correct? Well, let's say I had the timing cover on so I lined it up by using the crankshaft pulley and lined it up with the mark on the cover, ok? Now let's say I take the cover off and look at the oil pump. Strangely enough... without disturbing the crank at all, If I take the pulley and timing cover back off.. those marks are not aligned whatsoever. off by at least a tooth on the crank gear... which is probably like 40 degrees of timing lol.

So my question is... is this why I can't get my timing belt on? Because my marks have somehow gotten messed up?

The oil pump was taken off at the machine shop...

Other than that any clues? thanks,
Harry

well an easy way to tell if cyl #1 is at TDC is to stick a screwdriver with a long tip into the cyl. it self...remove the spark plug, and rotate the crank to the point where it is at the highest point....to get the timing belt back on you need to losen the tensioner...

Yes... And that's all done ;-) And I already did the screwdriver trick but I still want to be right on time u know... I don't want it to be off at all...

And the tensioner is loose as well. :-(

this works to set up the timing..i just did it with my friend on his B16a3, what you may need to do is rotate the crank a few times or pull on the belt to get it to loosen up...http://tech.hybridgarage.com/tech/cams.html read that thread on how to do the timing and to get the belt back on

an easy way to tell in the cyl is TDC is to turn the motor till the cams above the cyl point away from each other. That'll get ya pretty close, then you can use whatever method you want to get it exactly. Good luck.

Haha, thanks for the advice... And for resurrecting a decent post. haha.

Anyhow I lined it up by the pulley not the pump gear and it worked great. Although the cams were a different story...

I got it running, not realizing that the intake cam was off by a tooth... then like 4 days later the distributor pin fell out and made it slip off to where it wouldn't start... Then I fixed that and it is now running smoothly ;-)

Anyhow I gotta go strip the orange off and make way for the blue ;-)
