Default misfiring problem

so i sold my car: 2000 si and dropped it off last nite. before i got on the fwy i got a cel. first time ever. the car started idling funny. i hadnt drove the car for 2 weeks so i wondered if that had something to do with it and the cel turned off and stayed off for 10 miles on the fwy and i dropped the car off.

as i was leaving the guy started the car and called me saying the cel is on. the car was idling funny again. it was late so we decided to take to a shop in the morning.

this morning he called and emailed saying he took a look and this is what he found

yesterday after you left, I borrowed my friend's odbII scanner and found
2 fail codes, p0301 and P1399 one is misfire on cyl 1 other is "wait to
start lamp circuit" I tried to opened up and take the plug out to see, my
god, cyl 1 has oils on plug wire, and that spark plug got burned and became
black, I attached two pics, I then borrowed my friend's new denso platinum
plugs, new plug wires, distrbuter, rotor and caps and installed to the car,
fianlly got it done at 2am, and car seems to be running ok, but I only
tested like couple miles, from many signs I could tell car's been misfired
for a while, maybe not big enough that you could tell...... anyway I'll call
you this morning to talk about it.....
i put these plugs in about a month ago

he says the car appears to run ok now but both he and i want to find the cause and prevent from happening again
if thats the case i never knew about this. what might be the cause of this?

Could be a bad plug wire on #1, that'd be my first guess.

Oil on plug wire? I'd check valve cover gasket, spark plug grommet first.

Was there oil on the plug itself? Tell him to check the new plug after a few days. If so, it's possibly blowby. Compression & leakdown test.

Leaking valve stem seal or the rings may be allowing blowby as someone said.

A bad plug and wire will not cause an oil leak. It will cause the engine to missfire though, and add a black buildup to the bottom of the corresponding plug. Sense your car was idleing bad, I would think that one of the plugs wasn't sparking. I would tell the guy to check the bottom of the new plugs after a few days. If they look ok on the bottom, then you no its not blowby or valve guide/stem seal leaking.

You could always try, but I don't think the problem will change.
