Default Help: Identifying item on vacuum lines

i need to get the item circled in the picture... What is it? what does it do? is it necessary? Please help.. This is from a b18c1 intake vacuum lines

That's a check valve. When idling or operating at high manifold vacuum, the black canister stores vacuum. The check valve is there so you don't lose that vacuum the first time you go WOT.
