i want to buy a motor off the street on the recycler, my only problem is that how do i tell if that motor haven't been stolen??? a friend of mines bought a motor and he ran the vin # in car fax because the chp would not run it for him over the phone untill he brought it in. the title came out clean but when we took it to the chp dept, they ran up the block number and the motor was stolen. they took his motor and charge him with buying stolen stuff... how can you tell??? please help thank you...

The VIN will only be on the tranny, and is no good if the tranny was swapped. You need to run the block # down at the CHP prior to purchasing it.

 

Yes, get the block # and call CHP. They will usually want you to bring the motor in to check the block, but if you get someone cool they will do it for you anyways. They would like to have the motor there, so if it is stolen they will just confiscate it.

 

wrong the vin is on the motor on certain models. the 99-00 b16a2 has the vin on the motor and the trans. An easy solution to this problem is don't report it. Your gonna spend all that money, take it to get checked, if its stolen they are gonna take your motor and fine you screw that. Thats my .02$

 

This is why you call in. If you get caught with stolen parts, they can confiscate them and anything attached to them.

just hope if it is it doesnt turn out like my friends vw when they siezed the whole car and towed it away cause the block of the engine was astolen.
