Internal mods for a NA vehicle
Hey would anybody be able to provide me an extensive list of al internal mods possible/nessesary to run a turbo and @ higher boost levels? (i.e. between 10 lbs - 20 lbs)
Well, none in particular. I'm just trying to study up on how the entire turbo system works and what needs to be done to have it.... just basic stuff will do. The kind of internal mods that will most likely be needed on any engine with higher boost...thanks.
low compression pistons, rings, cylinder sleeves(depending on the engine), forged rods, stainless steel valves, titanium valve springs, cam/s, entire fuel system(ie beefy fuel pump, larger injectors, etc...), not to mention the turbo, manifold, BOV, wastegate, turbo timer, intercooler, piping and fittings etc...
You can run 14-15lbs of boost on an a stock B series block with the right tuning and engine management. For more reliability, you can look into forged pistons and rods. If you want to run 20lbs, you'll definitely need new sleeves.
why? are you trying to impress your friends on how fast you can wear out engine components? start with a stock motor, put on a entry level turbo kit. start high end work at the computer and tuning. you will find that you will be able to gain a few pounds that way. little by little, improve the car. treat the car as if it were boosted 4-6lbs from the factory and how you would go about improving THAT setup. starting out trying to out launch an F-16 with no experience is a joke. learn, then run with the big boys.
if you had a STOCK GSR with a basic Greddy Turbo kit, all the components will be able to handle it. I would spend some extra cash in a free flowing cat back and full EMS tuning abilities and put it in the hands of a knowledgeable tuner and become immersed in it. that car with 4-6lbs will see about a 30-40% increase in VE from such tuning. this setup I have seen with a FMI with 400/500 springs, koni yellows, brembo 13" disks up front in a 4dr GSR at talledega speedway. his dyno was 215/158 at the wheels, he had 36K when he did the turbo. if you do this, invest in your internals while the car is healthy. do research and learn from people a few years down that you can actually talk to and become friendly with. alot of people in this scene are liars. they want to see people lose, break stuff... see what works first hands so they can do whats right for thier own cars. speed shops are notorious for this and most of the time they are unaware just how stupid they are from an engineering perspective and what works... everything can be done on the right budget with the right amount of knowledge, expertise and time. just find out what is most important to you and charge off into the darkside...
