well, i am officially a bonehead. i just read the sticker under the hood, and the ignition timing is supposed to read 15degrees+/-2degrees before tdc, so everything was originally set right. this is where i was having problems, i was thinking that when setting the ignition timing it had to line up at tdc. now i have to move it back where it was, solve the heat problem, and hope i didnt do any damage.
