Default questions on rebuilding b18b for turbo

so ive changed my mind and decided i want to go built b18b instead of b18c. i want to eventually go turbo in a year or two, so is would it be possible if i could make a pretty powerful n/a engine that could be turboed later on with no problems. i was thinking like boring it out, but keeping a lower compression ratio. im still pretty new to building engines, but know some basics, so i know i would probably need new: piston, rings, rods, springs, valves, retainers, and new camshafts probably. what i dont know much about is like the block guards and new sleeves and such, would i need anything like this? i can get pretty much all the engine work done for free, so im not worrying about that. what would a good compression ratio be for this buildup? what brands would you recommend? has anyone done this before? ill prolly have more questions as i keep researching.

thanks

how much do you have to spend? what kind of hp goal do you have?

you cant build a reasonably powerful NA engine in hopes of turboing it without making some major changes. since you asked for some brands, i'll make a short list.

sleeves (pick a bore 81-84mm) - golden eagle, erl, benson's
9:1 forged pistons - wiseco, cp, arias, je
forged rods - manley, carillo, crower, pauter
valvetrain - crower, rocket, omnipower
engine management (most important) - hondata, aem, neptune, crome

well for hp i want 300-350 (hopefully) when turbod. im not really that concerned about having a whole lot of power n/a, but i dont want to put in a bunch of money for new internals and stuff and not have at least some power to show for it before i go turbo, because it would probably be a while after i do the rebuild. i guess i would probably be aiming for high 13's with just the n/a setup if thats possible, but if not prolly like mid-low 14's. i wanna keep costs pretty low. i havent really priced everything out to see how much it would all cost. if anyone has any estimates, that would be nice.

snoopy: for pistons you put 9:1. would that be a pretty good ratio for what im looking to do? im also a bit confused on the sleeves. if i bought these would i have to have the cylinders bored still? or would these go in place and just already be 81-84mm?

ummm i think thats it for now

thanks

to make power NA you would need big cams and high compression. something boost doesnt like. you have to pick one or the other and stick to it.

for your hp goal 9:1 is about as low as you should go. when you buy sleeves, you tell the shop installing them what bore you want and they will bore it out to that.

wheres a good place to buy this stuff? i cant find a whole lot of online stores. and you say that lowering the compression to 9:1 would be a good ratio. thats about .2 lower on the usdm engine. if i did this would it actually make my car slower because of the lower compression? or would i still gain because of the boring? o and what psi would i be safe running? it seems with stock internals, you can run up to about 10, so i was thinking maybe like 14 or so. would that be a good number? thanks a lot

i would guess it would feel the same, although the bigger bore will give you more power and torque. how much, there are too many variables to give a definitive answer. you can run as much boost as your tuner can safely tune for.

try searching through the sponsers forum here and other sites like h-t. you can usually find some good deals.

erl performance link

what about a setup like this? 9:1 ratio, stock stroke, 84mm bore

anything you would change? they say its for a turbo setup under 375 hp.
