Default 98 RL overheating while stopped or idling.

I have a 98 RL. with 146k.The temp rises when idled or when i'm stopped at a light. It doesn't happen every time I'm stopped at a light. When idled it takes a few minutes but eventually the temp. guage rises up. sometimes I also can smell ant-freeze. I replaced the thermostat but it still does it. It seems as though the coolant isn't cycling through the engine. While driving the car doesn't overheat and the temp gauge shows a good temp reading.

while the engine is running and I squeeze the radiator hose it doesn't seem to have any coolant running through. Any advice would be very appreciated.

Thanks
