mufflers dont really effect anything. The stuff further up on your exhaust make the biggest difference. You will probably have a tiny loss of power and it won't be very loud but it makes no real difference. But since you have turbo that makes more exhaust so you might want to get something high flow that is quiet. That is if you already have your whole exhaust done, otherwise don't bother.

What kind of tickets were you getting, fix it tickets or fines? Was the tickets for "sound" or just the fact that your muffler is aftermarket?

You can still get high flow out of an exhaust without it being overly loud.

What is your exhaust setup at the moment? Knowing that we can give some more useful suggestions.

For example assuming you are running a 2.5" downpipe, you can get a Carsound high flow cat with a 2.5" inlet and 3" outlet, and then run a Thermal Turbo 3" catback. As it comes from the factory the Thermal has no resonator, but you can have any competent muffler shop add an 18" long resonator to the mid pipe which will quiet things down nicely.

I am going to assume that you're in California, since they're the only state I ever hear anyone getting harassed for having loud exhausts. If so go get your exhaust tested for noise properly. Do yourself a favor and call the BAR to schedule a test, 800-622-7733.

Since I live in MA I am only aware of this from the May '04 issue of Sport Compact Car and Josh Jacquot's page 24 article on how many cars are actually legal and that an officer can't just make a judgement on his own as to what's too loud.

If you've already tried this approach and it didn't pass, then I guess you only have one choice.
