Default JDM in Cali

So I'm at one of the local speed shops today, and a guy comes in and asks the owner about a JDM engine swap, the owner tells this guy that he will pass smog with a US manifold and intake.. i was like :wtf: i thought JDM were no longer legal in cali. Any insight would be nice. Thanks.

even with the jdm manifold and intake im pretty sure it can pass smog, the sniffer part that is

for the visualization and ref worth his salt will notice it being a non-usdm motor

You can have a JDM motor in Cali, but you must have US smog equipment on the car, and all the correct sensors. I talked to the state ref about this when I had to go.

i have a STOCK B20..that includes the head. now, without looking at the engine code stamped onto the block, its practically impossible to distinguish a B20 engine to a B18B. but regardless, my dad has a test only smog station  as long as my car passes the sniffer test, its cool with him. besides, i dont even think my dad knows i have the B20. he just knows that i bought a new engine to replace my blown b18b. and since it looks the same i guess he didnt bother to check the engine code.
