Default Quick swap info needed....

Yea...I own and drive a 97 civic DX, and i want to know if i can just bolt a d16z6 vtec, d15b vtec, or just any d-series vtec head, or engine, right up to my car without any problems. Like if my 5 speed tranny would work with it, or if i needed to do any modifications.
I mean...my first thought was, that of course there should be no problems. But as u can already tell, I'm still learning, and even though it isnt a big swap, i want to make sure im doing the right thing.

So id like it if ne one can help with some feedback. Positive or negative.

I would stick to a d16y8 head because it is designed to work with an obd2 ecu. you will also need the ecu for the d16y8

Yeah you should have no problems. Even if you get a 92-95 motor your just gonna have to change the Distro, injectors. But yeah those swaps are simple and quick.

Does'nt really matter if it's newer or older. As long as the motor is in good shape. Newer is better but not in all cases. Goodluck man!

I would recommend you stick with a D16Y8 engine if you plan to go with a D-series swap. I wouldn't bother with just a head swap unless your in the mood to learn to do that sort of stuff. The lower compression pistons of your non-VTEC engine will hurt your final power output. The shorter gearing of your non-VTEC engine will also hurt performance. Here's an interesting link you should read.

I don't know if his issues were ever resolved but those are some of the pitfalls of trying to bolt an OBD I engine into an OBD II chassis.

The same can happen with a 1st gen JDM B16A swap (what I'm assumign your refering to with a B16A1). Aside from the above mentioned OBD issues (a 1st gen B16A will be pre-OBD and even more of an issue as they are no pre-OBD to OBD II conversion harnesses), a 1st gen B16A will also have a cable operated clutch, as oppsed to your hydro setup that was in all '92+ Civic's. There are workarounds for this, I think HASport makes a conversion mount and adaptor but you'll be much better off saving your money and buying a later model engine.

You could make an older engine work, but I honestly think in the long run, you'll be better off with the B16A2 (just to clarify, a B16A2 is from a '99+ Civic Si). Here's a good site with some info to help you research the swap itself and what you'll need.
