Even Maximum Boost has some follies.
You don't have to read just Honda specific books, read everything you can get your hands on. Performance theories and the physics behind engines apply across the board, so concentrate more on learning why certain things work, rather than what things work.
Also, don't take any author's word as gospel. Everybody makes mistakes, and I highly doubt anyone with the time to write an extensive book has both the mathematical/physics background as well as the machinist/mechanic background necessary to show what works, along with why it works with feasible mathematics.

Get some of the horsepower building books by Smokey Yunich. The books themselves are all about big, blown V8s, but the theory they present is relevant to every sort of reciprocating engine out there. If learning the ins and outs of performance is what you want, start by learning about the most simplest stuff first: carbureted pushrod engines.
Then move on to a book about fuel injection. The honda books you listed are good basic references, but I don't think they offer enough in the way of theory for you to truely do-it-all-yourself.
It sorta comes down to what you want to know. Just the basics of what you can do for general rules? The honda books (published by HP books) you listed are great. For anything more technical, you're going to be looking at engineering books which are an atrocious read.
