Default When To Shift?

When drag racing, illegally/legally is there any way to know when the optimal shifting point is for your ride? If so how can one find it??

Thanx

put it on a dyno and see where the power and torque begins to fall off, then shift just before that point.

Ideally, you should shift so that the RPMs fall right at, or slightly after your peak torque in the RPM band. The only way to find that point, however, is by way of a dyno plot, or lots of experiments.

Depends on the engine, but yeah, usually, because automakers set the gear spacing for you so that if you run to redline and shift, you're right back on top of your powerband.

On my 94' accord its redline is 6300 and the power tops out at about 5200...so i shift right around 5k so maybe what you heard about 1.5k before redline is correct, dont know...

Usually you want to shift so that your rpms drop into your powerband once you hit the next gear.
